INFANT FEEDING
WHAT TO FEED YOUR INFANT?
Early feeding and weaning is a complex tool that will play a vital role in your child's whole growth process. So being vigilant in the first-year time of your child is very important for you. The better you feed, the healthier your child is.Infancy is the time of growth from the birth of your child to his first birthday. This first year is going to be hectic and challenging. But once you start paying attention to what you are going to feed your child, you'll start enjoying your journey. At first, you must know the weight of your child. Baby needs 80-120 calories per pound he is having in his body. Maternal milk is the only food that you will feed your infant for the next six months. Carbohydrates, proteins, fats, salts, biologically active additives are present in maternal milk. And they are efficient for the physical and mental growth of your infant. Maternal milk is a natural gift, and it is crucial to the health of your child. In the first few days, the maternal milk is known as colostrum, being high in proteins and having a lesser amount of carbohydrates and fats. Maternal milk is rich in antibodies, thus boosts the immune system of your child. In this way, the body will not expose to several vulnerable bacteria.
The next stage after breastfeeding is WEANING/COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING. We move to this stage when breast milk is no more enough to fulfil the baby's needs.
Four stages of weaning:
There are four stages of weaning.
- Stage 1 (4-6 months)
Your child is big enough to sit on a high chair. Try to feed him with a small spoon. Don't rush your spooning speed. Take it slow. He is learning to accept food from a spoon. Feed him smooth and pureed foods like meals, iron-fortified formulas. Make a routine of feeding him thrice a day. And each meal must be of only 2 to 4 ounce in quantity.- Stage 2 (5-7 months)
A wide variety of tastes are introduced, again in soft lumps. Now you can feed pureed fruits and vegetables. Cereal formulas can provide to the child. Its high time to increase meal timings from three times a day to five to six times. And each serving can be 5 ounces.- Stage 3 (6-10 months)
Your child is learning to chew and accept different textures, food of firmer texture. You can add fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, water, and fruit juices to your meals. It's time to make him enjoy the new flavors. You can start adding pinches of spices as well. So that babies can get used to their taste.- Stage 4 (>10 months)
The baby is learning to bite and to self-feed. It can take 3 to 5 days to introduce a new food. Everything is new for his taste buds, so be patient. Mixed fruits cut in small size, boiled potatoes, macaroni, yogurt, fried or boiled egg, these all are the items you can feed to your baby.Despite the above all mentioned points, always keep in mind that this all will take time. Take a gap of at least four days while introducing a new food. Prepare fresh meals daily. Have a proper routine of feeding your baby at particular times.
